The Walled Garden at Lydiard Park: An Archaeological Evaluation by Bernard Phillips.
Summary:
'Investigation of the walled garden at Lydiard Park revealed that much of the Georgian garden lay-out survives. Bedding trenches, paths, and a probable tree planting pit were amongst the features locate. Alteration and additions to the lay-out culminated in a Victorian kitchen garden. Beneath the garden and ditch, a pig burial and an occupation layer attest late medieval settlement.'
Bernard Phillips was commissioned to undertake this survey by Lydiard House in order to confirm the presence of garden archaeology indicated by aerial views of the park, and to protect the garden from any disruptive development. .At the time the garden was a simple grass field and its history was largely unrecognised.
