The article resulted from a symposium on the conservation of two hatchments (funerary boards) which were made to commemorate Frederick St.John 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke and his daughter-in-law, Charlotte (Collins), 3rd Viscountess Bolingbroke.

It includes an introduction on the purpose and development of hatchments in churches, biographies of Frederick and his daughter in law Charlotte, and the conservation undertaken by Seonaid Wood of Elizabeth Holford Associates.
