Tony Spicer's article suggests that the Battle of Ellandun between Egbert of Wessex and Beornwulf of Mercia in September 825 took place Lydiard Tregoze rather than in the neighbouring Parish of Wroughton which is most regularly cited. There is general agreement that this seminal battle took place south of Swindon and Tony Spicer makes a very plausible argument for Lydiard Tregoze.

The article was written for the Journal of Historic Places of Military Conflict in association with the Battlefields trust. Vol 7 Issue 1, 2001
