Former Mayoress of Swindon, Sheila Fanning, shares her memories of Her Majesty's visit to Swindon and Lydiard House in November 1997 when she and her late husband, Cllr Maurice Fanning, Swindon's flamboyant Mayor, represented the town.

Sheila recalls the occasion with humour and affection describing light-hearted moments during the day.

'The train pulled in and a small lady with a bright red coat and hat and a beautiful smile stepped on to the platform. As the Lord Lieutenant took her along the line I had almost to pinch myself as it felt so unreal .....'
