'Painting the Past' was researched, scripted and performed by Swindon's youth theatre, Prime Theatre, as part of the St. Mary's Church Conservation Project in 2019. The play centres on the character of Sir John St. John, 1st Bart (d.1648), interpreting his sadness at losing his sons in the English Civil War and the solace he gained from memorialising his youngest son Edward in the Golden Cavalier Monument in St. Mary's Church. The play was performed in Lydiard Park at various locations around the house and church.
