In his introduction to the eulogy, Arnold Taylor writes that Simon Patrick was appointed by Sir Walter St.John as his household chaplain in 1658, the year Sir Walter succeeded to the Lydiard and Battersea Manors.

Sir Walter and his wife Lady Johanna were known for their Christian piety and in Patrick's words, 'never was any man, I have often thought, more beloved in any family than I was; especially by the lady of it, who was very pious; …. she told me she never understood religion till she knew me.'

The eulogy was a dedication to a religious treatise written at Battersea House by Patrick for Sir Walter and Lady Johanna St.John.
