This postcard by the well known Swindon Photographer, William Hooper, is especially interesting for the gossipy note of the sender who writes in November 1908 to a Miss Flower in Cookham Dean, Berkshire:

Dear Miss F,

This church is about 3 miles from Swindon. The house or rather part of the house you see on the right is the home of Lord Bolingbroke/ perhaps you have heard the late Lord B married his (Game) Keeper's daughter and no one knew he had an heir till after his death...

The scandal created by the 5th Viscounts secret marriage to Mary Howard is well documented and even made the national papers on the viscount's death in 1899.

William Hooper had a photographic business and shop at 6, Cromwell Street Swindon.
