Henry Mildmay St.John in mess uniform of the Worcestershire Regiment with his mother, Mary, Viscountess Bolingbroke, on the steps of Lydiard House. Henry was Mary's eldest child and one of three St.John boys, all of whom fought in World War I.

Following his posting to Gallipoli, Henry sent Mary regular and affectionate letters describing the journey and conditions when he arrived. He always took care to ask after her 'bad leg' which appeared to be a long standing condition.
