The memorial tablet commemorates Walter Hardyman, Armiger (meaning he was entitled to use heraldic arms), recording that he was many years in the 'Commission of the PEACE'. Walter died in 1774 aged 69 years.

The Hardymans were a prominent family in the parish. Thomas Hardyman was Lady Johanna's trusted steward, managing her husband's estate at Lydiard Park and to whom she wrote frequent letters of instruction and request.

The memorial was one of two Hardyman monuments which were placed over a medieval wallpainting of St. Christopher in the nave of the church. In 2019 both were relocated into the restored south porch so the wallpainting could be revealed and conserved.
