This bust of Henry St.John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751), was one of the few furnishings that remained in Lydiard House when Swindon Corporation purchased the property in 1943.

Henry St.John, an eminent politician, writer and political philosopher, was undoubtedly the most famous member of the St.John family.

The artist, (John) Michael Rysbrack, was one of the principal sculptors and designers in England at that time.

The photograph was one of a series of pictures taken by Country Life Magazine which appeared on March 19th and March 26th 1948.
