Marble bust of Henry St.John, 1st Visct Bolingbroke (1678-1751), by Michael Rysbrack

The bust, depicting Henry St.John, 1st Visct Bolingbroke in the guise of a Roman worthy, was the only remaining significant item of furnishing left in Lydiard House when the building was acquired by Swindon Corporation in 1943. It appeared to have escaped notice in a central and elevated position in the Entrance Hall and was possibly mistaken for one of a series of plaster busts that form part of the decorative schemes in both the Hall and Library. The bust was returned to its historic position on the Library mantelshelf where there existed a niche carved into the overmantel to accommodate it.
