John St.John, High Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1632, bought the manor of Cold Overton from the Earl of Northampton c.1620 and built the present hall c.1664.

By 1690s, the Lady Chapel of St. John the Baptist Church in Cold Overton had become the burial place for the St.Johns, who had Cold Overton Hall built. Simple slabs mark their graves beneath the south aisle, with decorative monuments along the east wall.

In the early 18th century, the manor was sold by the St John family to the Turner family. The Grade 1 Listed hall remains in privates ownership. The hall's original walled garden has been separately owned since the mid 20th century (Gates Garden Centre), one of the largest garden centres in the country.

John St.John appears to belong to a cadet line of the Bletsoe branch of the St.John family
