This handsome house, sadly no longer standing, was home to the family of Admiral Henry Craven St.John (1837-1909).

Henry Craven St. John was the son of Charles St. John and Anne Gibson. He was also a great grandson of Frederick, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke. He married Catherine Dora Rodney, daughter of John Stratford Rodney and Eleanor Hume, on 8th May 1860. At that time Catherine had been living at Stokefield House in Castle Street, Thornbury. The couple made this their home and all their nine children were born in Thornbury.

The photograph shows  the house as it was when the St John family lived there.

Stokefield House was sold in 1914 following Catherine's death. It was demolished and the plot now houses part of a retirement complex development along Castle Street.

See Items of Interest: 'Henry Craven St.John & Catherine nee Rodney St.John' for more about Stokefield and the career of Henry Craven St.John who rose to the rank of Admiral in the Royal Navy.
