A major feature of the restoration of Lydiard Park (2004-7) was the reinstatement of the lost lake. The dam had burst in 1911 and despite attempts by the council to re-create an area of water, the once substantial lake became an area of self seeded trees and overgrown vegetation. The upper lake and former medieval fish pond was reduced to a swampy and largely sterile environment.

Both lower and upper lakes were comprehensively restored as part of the major £5.3million landscape restoration project which had the dual effect of returning the park to its former glory and increasing biodiversity.
