1901
The New Year begins with an announcement of an engagement. Rowl proposes to Miss Kate Kinchin from Park Farm. Having sought permission to marry from her brother William, the important business of finding a place to live soon begins. They first view Flaxlands Farm in Lydiard Tregoze but eventually settle on West Street Farm in Great Somerford.
And by the end of the year Elliot is writing enthusiastically about a certain Miss Tottie Downes. During the Christmas festivities he writes in his diary:
“In the Evening Tottie made me a promise.”
Will there be another wedding in 1902?
Background
Elliot and his brother Rowland acquired the tenancy of Hook Farm in 1899 from the 5th Viscount Bolingbroke. In 1930 Elliott was able to purchase the farm when part of the Bolingbroke estate was sold by the Viscount's widow, Mary in 1930. The Woolford family remain there to this day.
The 1901 diary was transcribe by Frances Bevan in 2023.
