The Gough family have been associated with Lydiard Park and local life for several generations. Joyce and Roland's father was Swindon Council's first caretaker at Lydiard Park in 1943 and Joyce remembered her impressions of growing up in primitive conditions in the dilapidated mansion. After the war, older brother Roland joined the corporation's bus service and married Gertie Garret, the couple moving into their new home on the Lydiard Park 'Camp'.
