This article by former Curator at Lydiard House, Sophie Cummings, provides a general introduction to the operation of Prisoner of War camps in Britain during World War II and details of the German military hospital camp at Lydiard Park (1944-1948).

Her article includes short biographies of two outstanding men - John Bailey, Interpreter at the Camp and Dr Werner Wachsmuth, the German Camp Commandant and chief surgeon. Dr Wachsmuth is pictured on the first page, seated centrally with legs crossed and wearing boots.
