The postcard shows Vernon St.John, 6th Viscount Bolingbroke unveiling the Lydiard Tregoze World War I memorial on the 4th December 1920. A large crowd of ex-service men and local families gathered for the outdoor ceremony on the corner of Hook Street on a wet looking day. It was just over two years since Armistice had been declared and memories must still have been very raw.

Vernon St. John and his two elder brothers fought in the war; Vernon in the 3rd Dorsetshire Regiment, the only English lord to serve as a Private. He was invalided out a week before the Armistice with shell shock.
