Ernest James Titcombe of Lydiard Tregoze volunteered to fight in WWI in 1915 and joined the 1st Wiltshire Regiment as a Private in November of that year.

Two of the photographs show him in distinctive hospital uniform, recording the time he spent recovering from injuries in a military hospital which had been set up in a large stately home in the Rhondda, Wales. The house and surrounding estate belonged to Lord and Lady Rhondda.
