Hidden Content, Images, Videos and Documents
The stone memorial tablet to Vernon Henry St.John Viscount Bolingbroke (1896-1974) marks the spot where his ashes were interred. It sits just outside the railings which enclose the vault in which his parents were buried. The vault had closed in 1940 following his mother's internment as it was only large enough to accommodate two burials.
A butterfly motif is etched on the stone, reflecting Vernon's life long interest in Lepidoptery. The inscription records the viscount was a 'Naturalist and Entomologist'. (His collection of butterflies and moths is held in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff).
Also recorded is Catherine McLean (1927-2000) whose ashes were buried alongside those of the viscount. Miss McLean, shared the viscount's home in Ringwood, Hampshire and was a close and devoted companion.
