Regimental cap badge that belonged to Vernon St.John, 6th Viscount Bolingbroke (d.1974). Part of a collection of WW I military cap badges and memorabilia which the viscount kept throughout his life. The Latin motto on the badge, Primus in India, translates as First in India.

Vernon enlisted in the Dorsetshire Regiment in April 1917 and fought at both Passchendaele and the Somme. Sadly and like many before him, he was stricken with shell shock. He was awarded an Honourable Discharge in 1918.

The badge was generously gifted to the Friends of Lydiard Park by a private donor in 2023.
